How to be a good partner?

It is certainly not easy to become a good partner in somebody’s life. While you have your own, complex inner world, your specific character, there are also multiple types of other people in the world, with their very specific personal habits, temper, etc. So, you have to be more reasonable and thoughtful, if you want to be a good partner, try to keep in mind these next points:

1) Ignore past mistakes – A good partner puts the past in perspective and doesn’t permanently bring up reminders from the past that serve no useful purpose in the present. Such as something your partner did months or years earlier. Try to keep on moving.

2) Do not compare – Each person you date has strengths and weaknesses, abstain from comparing your current partner to your exes – particularly unfavorably. Just because your ex was unfaithful does not mean that another partner will be so too.

3) Understand the idea of “give and take” – You must be aware that all relationships need both partners to put in effort. It is all about balance, about the give and take. If one person does all the taking, the imbalance will end up in problems. Only one person doing all the giving will result in resentfulness.

4) You have to know the importance of time alone – A good partner understands when personal space and time out is needed. A healthy relationship includes having interests beyond the relationship. Spending excessive time together can lead to a feeling of suffocation. So, again, a balance is crucial.

5) You must prioritize communication – A good partner places communication as a high priority. If you have the ability to communicate with one another, many if not most issues can be worked out . Being able to talk openly and knowing you will be heard and not dismissed or ignored is essential for the durability of a relationship.

6) You have to be straightforward/uncomplicated – A good partner doesn’t engage in game playing. Live with honesty and talk about/discuss your problems instead of involving yourself in underhanded tactics such as withdrawing affection or passive aggressive behavior.

7) It is crucial to be tuned in – You need to know your significant other’s so called “love language,” from acts of service to affection to spending quality time together to verbal expressions to gifts.

8) Try to be cheery and joyful – A good partner has a good sense of humor, so, both of you can exchange jokes, fool around and make each other laugh.

9) Be reasonable – Try to have realistic expectations of your significant other. We all tend to make mistakes, as we all are human-beings. You mustn’t have double standards through which one set of rules applies to you and a different set of rules applies to everyone else.

10) Be self-aware – You need to understand when you are projecting. Frequently, we expect others to show strengths that we wish we had. When they don’t, we feel disappointed. Learn to evolve these skills in yourself and use your relationship as a way forward to personal progress and enlightenment.

11) Be optimistic – Try to have positive prospect; Expect of the relationship to be good and to last and do not think about negatives. Concentrating on the bad parts can lead to self-fulfilling prophecies.

12) Take responsibility for yourself – Do not expect your significant other to be the only generator of happiness in your life. You need to comprehend that for our own happiness only we are responsible. A partner is a wonderful reward but not a necessity in life.

13) Don’t be emotionally abusive, manipulative or controlling – You should treat your significant other with respect by not criticizing them persistently, embarrassing them in front of others or trying to control them.

14) Try to be generous with your time and/or resources – Show empathy and work with your partner as a team. It’s not all about you, just like it’s not all about them. You work together, and you must understand the concept of strength in numbers and be happy to offer support.

15) Be dependable – You need to be responsible and reliable. Try to always be there for your partner in a crisis, if you are able to.

16) Be supportive – A good partner encourages their significant other to be the best they can be. You should not feel threatened by their success and you naturally bring out the best in them.

17) Invest permanent effort into the relationship – You must understand that relationships take work and do not chug along for ever without investing any effort in. Know that, the honeymoon phase is only a phase.

18) Be honest and trustworthy – Be trustworthy, say what you mean and would never cheat on them. If you do meet someone else, you would end the relationship rather than deceive them and hurt them by leading them on.

19) Do not be ashamed to say “sorry” – A good partner is self-aware enough to know when they are in the wrong and have no problem with apologizing.

20) Be the best friend of your significant other – A good partner offers a wonderful friendship. Friendship can secure a relationship when the going gets tough. If you are friends, the other problems can always be worked out, since friendship guarantees a solid foundation for a happy healthy relationship.

It is certain that we are all human and cannot be good partners 100% of the time. Just try to possess most of the qualities listed above and generally be someone who is happy with who you are and how you live your lives. Once you accept yourself, there is always more to give to others.
